FOSS4G:UK 2026 is Coming to Leeds!

We are delighted to announce that FOSS4G:UK is back in 2026!

  • Where: The event will be taking place at the wonderful Horizon Leeds venue.

  • When: On Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th October 2026.

  • What: Two days of amazing presentations and discussion around open-source software and open data and community, all related to geospatial.

  • Who: Anyone with an interest in geospatial and open concepts.

  • Why: Because we all need fun and interesting things in our lives!

  • How: You can get involved by submitting a talk proposal, registering and (if you are able) getting your organisation to join the list of event sponsors!

Building on the success of last year's event, the conference will once again offer two full days of talks and workshops spread across multiple rooms, packed with open source geospatial content, discussion and plenty of networking opportunities. No matter who you are, this is the prime national gathering for the open source geospatial community in the UK.

Here's just some of what folks said about the event in 2025, and we are planning more of the same in 2026:

  • Fantastic event, thanks for organising!

  • Just to reiterate that it was beyond my expectations and really enjoyable - well done to all involved.

  • The openness of the presenters and also all the other attendees is also excellent and the networking invaluable.

  • Great engagement from everyone (speakers, sponsors, delegates) made for a lot of interaction, learning and excitement.

  • Very happy to see a lot of new faces, and first time presenters. Definitely one of the best of recent events!

  • Fantastic, would definitely come again.

  • Well done to the FOSS4G team, great work. Big pat on the back.

FOSS4G:UK 2026 SPONSORSHIP

If your organisation is keen to support the event, sponsorship packages are still available. In particular we are looking for additional Gold and Silver level sponsors, as well as sponsors for the evening social event. Could this be you or your organisation? We also have a new sponsorship level just for freelancers and independent consultants - you can sponsor the OSGeo:UK AGM which will get your name in front of all AGM attendees. Sponsorship is a fantastic way to raise your profile within this vibrant and growing community and a way to support the OSGeo:UK volunteers in continuing to put on events like these.

All of the details are listed here: https://uk.osgeo.org/foss4guk2026/sponsor/

FOSS4G:UK 2026 CALL FOR TALKS

The conference is built on the awesome work that you (yes, you!) are undertaking. All of the sessions, workshops and talks only exist because members of the community submit proposals for presentations. A strong conference comes from having more submissions than sessions so that the most interesting and diverse set of presentations can be selected. Everyone is strongly encouraged to submit a presentation proposal.

Submit your proposal here: https://uk.osgeo.org/foss4guk2026/callfortalks/

FOSS4G:UK 2026 REGISTRATION

Registration is NOW OPEN! 🎉 You can now register (including special tickets for students and additional low cost tickets ) for the conference. Early bird tickets are open and available for a limited time - booking an early bird ticket not only gets you lower cost entry but also signals to the organisers that there is community interest in the conference (helping with decision making about components of the event). The event is guided by an inclusive Code of Conduct, ensuring a welcoming environment for all attendees.

Put the dates in your diary and sign up here: https://uk.osgeo.org/foss4guk2026/registration/

Wider Geospatial News

Image description

GeoServer 3.0-RC is now available and this milestone is the direct result of a community effort. The crowdfunding campaign launched in September 2024 set a total target of 550,000 EUR and surpassed its community goal of 400,000 EUR in May 2025.

What's new in GeoServer 3.0

  • New context-driven UI — redesigned administration interface, fully responsive

  • Full-screen layer preview — improved map exploration experience

  • Modern Java stack — JDK 17 alignment, Jakarta EE, Spring modernisation

  • Stronger security — updated vulnerability management and dependency hygiene

  • ImageN raster engine — replaces ageing JAI/ImageIO-Ext components

  • Clean upgrade path — from GeoServer 2.28.x, no data directory changes required

This is a great piece of news, and what gives us the fuzzies is that we at OSGeo:UK have had a thank you from the GeoServer team for our support through GoFundGeo in 2024. See: https://uk.osgeo.org/gofundgeo.html#2024.

"I wanted to reach out to you personally on behalf of the entire GeoServer 3 team, to share an important update ... GeoServer 3.0-RC is now available.

This release candidate is the concrete result of the crowdfunding campaign you supported. Your contribution made it possible to move GeoServer 3 from a plan into a modernized platform ...

You can download GeoServer 3.0-RC directly from
https://geoserver.org/release/3.0-RC/, or try it immediately with Docker:
    docker run -p 8080:8080
docker.osgeo.org/geoserver:3.0-RC

... For a more detailed overview of the release and the journey from campaign to RC, I invite you to read our blog post.

Thank you again for believing in this work and for being part of it".
